CARE Toolkit

The CARE Toolkit enables experts and non-experts alike to assess the condition of open-air rock art.

This is primarily by recording against several "risk factors" for the rock. These "risk factors" have been developed through scientific research and so tie to our current understanding of what is causing the rock art to decay.

The CARE Toolkit is in four parts:

  • Baseline Record Sheet- to record the risk factors against a panel for the first time.
  • Update Record Sheet– to record the panel on subsequent visits. It has factors that will not change removed.
  • Helpful Information– a sheet of advice to take out into the field with you.
  • Definitions– detailed definitions of the risk factors.

You can download each item by clicking on their name above.

How to use

  1. It is recommended that the baseline record sheet is first filled out. This can be at the rock art panel, or later if you feel you have a good knowledge of the rock.
  2. Please find advice on how to use the record sheet on this site, with the helpful information sheet or with the definitions sheet.
  3. A digital photograph of the rock in its current state is recommended. This can be attached to the record sheet, if it is filled out electronically.
  4. For subsequent visits you can use the update record sheet in order to make the recording process quicker.
  5. Please use a new record sheet for each "panel" (individual rock containing the rock art).
  6. Once the record sheet is filled out, you can keep it for your own use in terms of monitoring the rock over time.
  7. It is also recommended that you send the sheet to your Local Archaeological Officer. You can find contact details for who is this here.

Further detailed information on the various risk variables and how to record them can be found at the link to the left or here.
