Theme 9: (MAST)

'Advanced hydrodynamics, simulation and operation for improved marine transport efficiency'

Research Team:

  1. MAST (NCL) : Professor Longbin Tao, Dr Michael Woodward, Dr Alan Murphy, Dr Ignazio Maria Viola, Professor Martin Downie
  2. SJTU : Professor Yang Jianmin, Professor Xuefeng Wang , Professor Ning Ma

Objectives: This research theme will develop novel ship hull-forms with advanced hydrodynamic characteristic to reduce resistance and maximize efficiency of selected vessel types and to investigate the reduction in fuel usage from global shipping under realistic conditions through simulating ship operations.

Engagement: SWAN is currently working on a project which undertakes model testing, numerical simulation and experiments on ship performance in irregular waves and collaboration with SJTU would allow this work to be expanded and include additional vessel types and further analysis. Also SWAN is in the process of setting up a state of the art ship simulation facility and SJTU have a world leading simulator facility already in operation. Short-term visits to SJTU to work alongside colleagues and utilise facilities will be carried out. Best practice and further research insights in to the operation and use of ship simulators will be directly bring benefit to the simulator development and establish long-term links between the two facilities.

Additional Existing Resources:
