Objective:

Promoting more sustainable lifestyles in modern societies is a key to energy reduction in times of diminishing resources. Especially in growing economies changes in lifestyles of large parts of the population accelerate both energy consumption and waste. We will use computational behaviour analysis techniques for monitoring changes in lifestyles with respect to overly increased energy consumption. We will investigate the effectiveness of innovative human computer interaction techniques for promoting more sustainable living. Behaviour monitoring will be based on machine learning techniques for human activity assessment using opportunistic sensing and intervention techniques are based on the user-centred design paradigm. For the latter ecologically valid user studies will be conducted and interventions will be designed with future users integrated into the design and evaluation process.

Engagement:

Visits to China for design of sensing system and a user study. Workshop in China to build collaboration with colleagues from e.g. SHJT and to connect with co-applicants. Workshop in Newcastle with colleagues from China, linked to EPSRC research hub SiDE. TP and the RA will first travel to China to coordinate joint work and design the user study which will be conducted by Chinese colleagues. Recorded data will be analysed at Newcastle University. Joint meeting (either in China or in Newcastle) to generate manuscripts, provide lectures, and generate a joint proposal.
