Tom Whittle

Tom Whittle’s practice navigates the duality of definition, ambiguity of usefulness and diluted purpose of the quiet unassuming two-dimensional image, through painting, photography, drawing, publishing and writing. Whittle has curated exhibitions (Greetings, Mauve, Vienna 2019, These fingers read sideways, MONOMATIC, Edinburgh 2018 andRIFF at Baltic Project Space, Newcastle 2014) and the ongoing project Slide Night. In 2016 he founded Long Distance Press, a small publishing company, with artist Adam Shield- to date they have published 14 books. In 2017, Whittle took part in Syallbus II, an altenative peer-led learning programme organised by Wysing Arts Centre and hosted by East Side Projects, S1 Sheffield, Studio Voltaire, New Contemporaries and Spike Island. 

Recent publications include Conche Paintings and IonRU published by Long Distance Press, the self-published Your Space is Only a LineMy Mate Bill Blake andCamper Vans Deuce, Right On published by Foundation Press and Tessex? published by Image Text Ithaca Press. He is founder of the curatorial project MONOMATIC, a roaming project space. He has shown in Manchester, London, Worcester, Newcastle, Liverpool, Toronto, Munich, Dortmund, Vienna, Brussels, Los Angeles and Istanbul.
