Background

NHS dentistry costs almost £4 billion per year and treats approximately 2.2 million adults. It is a critical part of the NHS healthcare system, yet little is known about preferences for dental care generally and more specifically NHS dentistry. This information is important as the money used to fund NHS dentistry comes from taxpayer funds and dental patients, meaning they should be able to provide their thoughts and opinions about what care is available, who it is available to and how it should be recieved. Furthermore, dental professionals are in a position where they can provide NHS and private dental care. Now the NHS contracts dental care is changing, it is vital the new contract reflects the preferences of dental professionals to ensure NHS dentistry remains available for those who want, and need, to use it.
