Epigenetic Regulation: Nucleation and Dynamics of Specialised Chromatin Domains.

Robin Allshire is a world leader in the fields of epigenetics and chromosome biology. Work from his laboratory in the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell Biology at the University of Edinburgh has shown that normal centromere activity requires heterochromatin and histone modifications on Histone H3 and CENP-A.  They have demonstrated that these modifications require the RNAi machinery, linking centromeric transcription to centromere specification. More recently they have shown that heterochromatin states can be inherited through cell division in fission yeast, and have applied cutting edge mass spectrometry techniques to reveal critical centromere regulators. He is a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow and was elected a member of EMBO in 1988, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2002, and of the Royal Society in 2011, and received the Genetics Society Medal in 2013.
