The spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC): a self-monitoring system of chromosome segregation control and beyond”

In higher organisms, chromosome segregation is a critical biological event regulated by the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC), an intricate and evolutionary conserved signalling mechanism that ensures the arrest of cells in mitosis until defects in chromosome attachment are repaired. The molecular understanding of this regulatory mechanism constitutes an important problem in biology because even subtle defects in chromosome segregation lead to an abnormal number of chromosomes (a pathogenic state known as aneuploidy), which can, through alteration of cell physiology and metabolism, promote genome instability, DNA damage, birth and developmental defects, and cancer. This talk will focus on recent developments towards the mechanistic understanding of SAC function and the emerging roles of central components of the SAC beyond cell division regulation.
