Title: CDK6 - a new role for an old kinase in leukemogenesis.
Professor Veronika Sexl, Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Veterinary Medicine of Vienna
Veronika Sexl studied medicine at the University of Vienna. After a postdoctoral fellowship at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis with C. Sherr and J. Ihle she started her own research group in Vienna in 2001. In 2007 she became full professor for “Signal transduction and molecular targeted therapies" at the Medical University of Vienna. Since 2010 she has been Head of the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Veterinary University of Vienna. Her main research focuses on leukemogenesis and the signalling networks maintaining disease and regulating tumor immune surveillance. Her lab employs genetically modified mice as well as human tumor patient samples to unravel molecular mechanisms leading to cancer development and maintenance. While she is known for her work in JAK-STAT signalling, her latest research concentrated on the cell cycle kinase CDK6. Her lab uncovered a novel role for CDK6 as a transcriptional regulator in hematopoietic cells extending to leukemic stem cells.
