Captured 2017

Chris strikes the right note with Captured scheme

Founded in October 2015 at Bamburgh House in Newcastle, Lindon Entertainment is a studio delivering industry standard recordings at competitive and affordable rates.  The business has a range of clients from singers and rappers to creative agencies who travel from as far afield as Brighton and London to use the studio for voice over work.  Alongside the recording studio, Chris has also developed a record label and to date has signed two acts with their launch albums very close to completion.

He now has ambitious plans to grow the business, entering international markets including the UAE and is taking on an intern to boost Lindon Entertainment’s marketing strategy and social media footprint.

For Chris, music has always been a passion, giving him a focus and new lease of life. He said;

“Originally from Sunderland, I moved to Newcastle to start a new chapter in my life. It’s true to say that I was a bit lost during my adolescent years doing the odd bit of bar and call centre work, but my passion has always been music. I was keen to create a first class recording studio, discovering talent and making albums that people enjoy.  With two artists and a producer signed in 2017, we are proud to see that dream becoming a reality.”

With ambitious plans to grow and diversify the business, Chris wanted to find the support of a mentor and peer group of like-minded business owners and so signed up to Newcastle University Business School’s Captured scheme.

Chris added;

“Being a member of The Prince’s Trust’s enterprise scheme has taught me what a difference external support can make to your business so when I heard about the Captured programme, I knew it was too good of an opportunity to miss. I was keen to learn from experienced business professionals and have someone to challenge me in my thinking but I also wanted to learn from peers in the same boat as me, sharing ideas and talking things through together.”

Chris was assigned mentor Tom Ritchie, Lead Customer Service Manager of Payroll at Sage who played an invaluable role in helping him think through his strategy of taking his music to new markets including countries like Dubai and Qatar.  His ambition being to not only create music shows but also have his artists become support acts to bigger named stars.

Chris said;

“Tom was invaluable in helping me think through my strategy for new markets. He gave me a lot of advice on how to research the new market, posing questions to challenge my thinking around whether there was an underground music scene, who my competitors were and my pricing strategies. I feel this has made my planned approach much stronger.”

During the programme, the Captured team also supported Chris’s dream of securing a paid intern by introducing him to a programme led by Northumberland College who have secured £4.9m of European Social Fund (ESF) investment from the Skills Funding Agency to deliver support for 645 small and medium-sized enterprises. With funding in place for a 60-day placement, Chris’s new recruit will help create a social media and marketing strategy for the business.

As well as moving into new markets, Chris’s long term goal is to have a roster of artists signed to his label and a team of managers to support those acts. He also wants to develop a world class studio that people want to come to from near and far and where undiscovered talent can be found and nurtured. And what better city to do this in than Newcastle!

Fiona Whitehurst, academic lead for Captured said;

“Chris is an example of an ambitious entrepreneur who is prepared to seek out external advice to ensure his success. We were delighted to be able to support him and look forward to following his progress.”
