The project team are organising a special session on ‘Rethinking economic and social development in “left behind places”' at the Global e-Festival on ‘Regions in Recovery: Building Sustainable Futures’ organised by the Regional Studies Association. 25 papers will be presented at this special session on 3rd and 4th June 2021, covering themes such as populism, discontent and regional decline, conceptualising left behind places, shrinkage and demographic decline and social infrastructure and services. The special session is designed to frame and introduce the project, featuring presentations by members of the project team on the etymology of ‘left behind places’ and the challenges of defining and operationalising ‘left behind places’ for comparative cross-national analysis.
