Bee-ing Human TEI Workshop
Introduction to digital textual editing with TEI
23-24 January 2023
Newcastle University
Animating Text Newcastle University (ATNU) and the Research Software Engineering (RSE) team are hosting a two-day intensive workshop on digital textual editing using the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) guidelines. The TEI is the de facto standard for describing textual material in digital form, and essential for its digital (re-)presentation and analysis. This workshop is made possible by Bee-ing Human, a Leverhulme funded interdisciplinary project, and co-organised by its team.
This workshop will introduce you to the basic concepts of digital editing and the main TEI vocabulary, leading you from your first basic encoding to how to publish the final product as a digital edition. The teaching will focus on the scholarly editing of historical prose printed texts with view to publication, but the basic principles taught can also be applied to texts in other modes or media (such as manuscript verse), or other editorial objectives such as lexical and semantic analysis.
The in-person workshop will consist of a mix between introductory lecture and workshop practice sessions, and it will be led by James Cummings (School of English) and Tiago Sousa Garcia (RSE). The workshop will take both mornings and afternoons on both days, roughly from 9:30 to 17:30 with comfort and lunch breaks between sessions.
The workshop is completely free and open to any staff member or postgraduate student from Newcastle University or any of the N8 universities — space, however, is limited and will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. Attendants will need to bring their own laptop and ensure they have the ability to install software in advance of the workshop. Joining instructions (including how to install and activate the necessary software as well as final timetable and campus directions) will be sent in advance of the workshop.
This is an introductory workshop: no previous experience of TEI, XML, textual editing, or digital approaches to text is needed or expected. To attend, simply register here. Registrations close on the 19th of January but, remember, space is limited, so register early.
