Let’s Talk Research- discussing research with retirement community residents

Members of the AGE Research Group recently held a successful engagement event with residents from Pilgrims Court in Jesmond to discuss a range of topics related to research participation. The session was a great opportunity to hear about some of the barriers to research for older people and for the AGE team to share and get feedback on their ideas to increase involvement.

This was the first in a series of events funded by a Tilly Hale award for the ‘Let’s talk research’ project led by Dr Christopher Hurst. This aims to involve older people living with multiple long-term conditions and frailty in conversations about research.

The event was incredibly well received by residents and staff of Pilgrims Court; “It was wonderful to see our community members so positive and enthusiastic. You were able to draw out responses and reactions from our people, some of whom would not usually offer comments and observations so readily.... I know our residents look forward to further contact with you all.” Kathy, Chaplain Pilgrims Court.

The information gathered from the event will enable us to better support older people to engage with and become involved in research.

Huge thanks to all the participants for their time and enthusiasm, and we look forward to further conversations with them about research.
