"Energy efficiency lessons from the food and beverage industry” - 5th of February 2015
** To build on the momentum of the event, there will 3-full-day GREENFOODS energy training module event (free to register and attend) from 30th of March 2015 and 1st of April 2015 in Newcastle with CPD, co-organised by Newcastle University and Energy Institute). The content of material covered will be roughly similar to content covered in Green Foods Power Point. Please contact Dr. Chian Wen Chan for more information at chian.chan@ncl.ac.uk |
Jointly organised by the Sir Joseph Swan Centre for Energy Research (http://www.ncl.ac.uk/energy/) and Energy Institute (https://www.energyinst.org/home). Visit the GREENFOODS website for more information.
This half-day seminar examined energy efficiency in the food and beverage industry at all scales. See below for summaries of presentations & presentation slides.
Following the presentations delegates chose a workshop session to discuss key points around each topic area. The day wrapped up with each group reporting back their conclusions.

Short presentation covering Innovation Voucher scheme, available to SMEs for continued collaboration between research and industry.
Dr Chian Chan GradEI, EU GREENFOODS project: The current impediments that prevents wide scale energy efficiency implementation of SMEs in the food and beverage industry in the UK.
Newcastle’s role in GREENFOODS’ energy efficiency and renewable energy implementation especially in Food & Drinks Industry in the UK. In the project, we have actively collaborated to encourage knowledge transfer across countries and partners amongst GREENFOODS project participants on best practices and best available technologies (BATs). In the presentation, I will be talking about the role of financial incentives, energy audits, food processing (specifically in meet industry), refrigeration WikiWeb and Branch concept (calculation tool) for creating lasting impact.
-

An overview of the meat industry and the supply chain along with and approximate energy usage at each phase. Highlight the current pressures and drivers on the industry. Introduce the Sustainability clubs and also highlight some of the activity that certain companies have already implemented. Introduce a summary of VECC and ask for feedback as to what we would like to see on it.

Jon Barker CEng MEI Chartered Energy Engineer, Energy Consultant and RPEC member: Case study of energy audit of systems used across sectors, including the food and beverage industry.
A brief overview of the basic system I use to achieve energy efficiency in any production facility. A review of the big energy using systems found in practically all production facilities followed by actual Enerjon case study review for each:
-
Will Todd, UK Beer and Pubs Association: Energy efficiency in the food, beverage and brewing industries, development of sector wide ESOS compliance scheme with BBPA for the brewing industry.
ESOS & Energy Opportunity Assessment - Taking an Industry Approach: This talk explores how taking an industry wide approach to ESOS compliance, using a standardised audit methodology can provide valuable comparators and deliver increased cost savings to businesses.
InMetriks, is a standardised methodology used to benchmark the energy efficiency of industrial plants, provide an assessment of maturity in the application of energy saving measures and identify the scale of potential future opportunities.
Carbon Architecture and the British Beer and Pub Association are running an industry wide ESOS compliance scheme for the UK brewing and pub industries based on the InMetriks methodology. As well as meeting the basic requirements of compliance, the scheme will deliver comparative metrics, benchmarking, trend longer term performance, and identify significant cross industry opportunities for the uptake of energy efficiency measures.
