Solar Disinfection

Solar disinfection is an effective water treatment method. Ultra-violet rays from the sun are used to inactivate pathogens present in water.

How to use:

  • Clear plastic/glass bottles can be used
  • Bottles need to be cleaned
  • Fill bottle to three-quarters full and shake vigorously, then fill completely
  • Expose bottles to sunlight for 6 hours or for 2 days if the sun is obscurred by clouds
  • Water should be consumed directly from the bottle or transferred to a clean glass
  • To be effective, solar disinfection must be applied to relatively clear water
