TraPCAf Researchers on The Movers & Shakers Podcast
Dr Tash Fothergill-Misbah and Professor Richard Walker appeared on The Movers & Shakers Podcast this week, talking about what Parkinson’s looks like across the African continent — the challenges, innovation, and the work ahead.
They discussed the World Health Organization’s Intersectoral Global Action Plan (IGAP) and the barriers many communities face in accessing diagnosis and treatment. Dr Fothergill-Misbah and Professor Walker also highlighted how stigma continues to shape people’s experiences of Parkinson’s, and how creative approaches — including theatre and film — are helping open up conversations.
The episode explored the potential of Mucuna Pruriens as an alternative therapy, the continent-wide research being undertaken through TraPCAf, and the importance of workforce training through International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society educational programmes.
They also emphasised the vital role of community support, including the work of Parkinson’s Africa, in improving awareness, confidence and access to information.
