Parkinson’s Disease Research in Ethiopia: Lessons Learned and the Road Ahead

On November 29-30, 2025, TraPCAf (Transforming Parkinson's Care in Africa) held a workshop in collaboration with Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences. This event brought together researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and other key stakeholders to discuss current efforts to improve Parkinson's disease care in Ethiopia.

Key topics for discussion included:

  • The current research landscape of Parkinson's disease in Ethiopia, including present understanding and opportunities for development
  • The Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders (IGAP) and its relevance to the broader policy framework
  • The development of Parkinson's care clinical trials in Ethiopia, including the potential role of herbal medicine

Important themes emerged from the workshop, highlighting the need for robust evidence generation, cross-institutional collaboration, and improvements to regulatory frameworks. With a greater focus on patient-centred care, these priorities will help create a stronger foundation for Parkinson's disease research and care delivery in Ethiopia.
