Miriam tells us about her time with TraPCAf
Project title: Exploring the Impact of Diagnosis for People with Parkinson’s Disease and their Caregivers in Tanzania
Details: My qualitative project involved interviewing people with Parkinson’s and caregivers to understand their lived experiences. The interviews were audio-recorded, translated and transcribed to allow analysis which identified common themes. My project contributed to my Master of Research degree in Global Health at Newcastle University. I spent three months collecting data in Tanzania, and two months analysing the data and writing up my dissertation in Newcastle.
Favourite bit of the project: We often conducted the interviews at participant’s homes. We were always greeted with overwhelming hospitality and kindness.
Important lessons learnt: This was my first time working on a research project. I have gained an understanding of the background work it takes to generate data for a study and how to write academically. It was also a great opportunity to work independently and focus on an area of interest to me.
Advice to fellow MRes students: Enjoy the process of data collection, it’s a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the research that you will later be writing about.
