Objectives

1. To integrate materials synthesis with separating layer fabrication in order to create optimal structures for robust polymeric membranes.

2. To develop new strategies for producing membranes that are capable of resisting mechanical stresses, chemical poisons and phase segregation processes.

3. To develop hybrid membranes in which multiphase structures and their interfaces are exploited to provide defined transport pathways.

4. To characterise our membranes under operating conditions, and to use the information gained for molecular design of improved membrane materials to be used in preparing the subsequent generation of membranes.

5. To convince the membrane community to move away from from design of membranes based upon maximisation of their initial performance, to membranes designed for longevity.

6. To demonstrate to industry and academia the impact of our transformative research in an area of great strategic importance to the UK.
