As a driving force for the interdisciplinary Eastern European and Russian Research Group (EERRG), the International Centre for Music Studies is co-organising (with Media, Culture and Heritage) a conference on 14 September 2018 under the heading of Eastern European Imaginaries.

Conference on Eastern European Imaginaries
13-14 September 2018

Deadline for abstracts: 20 July 2018 by 5pm
Newcastle University’s interdisciplinary Eastern European and Russian Research Group (EERRG), supported by the School of Arts and Cultures (SACS) and the Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (HASS), invite proposals for a conference on 14 September 2018 on ‘Eastern European Imaginaries’. We conceive of such imaginaries in broad terms and welcome papers from a diverse range of disciplinary approaches (including, but not limited to: architecture, anthropology, cultural studies, ethnomusicology, gender studies, history, literary studies, media studies, music, musicology, political science, sociology). We welcome papers that investigate definitions, theories, conceptualisations, identities, reconstructions and mediations. We also welcome practice-based approaches.
Themes include, but are not restricted to:
- defining Eastern Europe
- the persistence of national identities
- new diasporas (including migration, displacement, arrival and inhabitation of new lands)
- Soviet and post-Soviet cultures
- conceptualisations of post-socialism
- legacies, memory work and the writing of history
- past trauma and suffering
- oral testimony
- mediation by translation
- landscapes
Presentations are invited of 20 minutes each. Abstracts of no more than 200 words should be received by 5pm on Friday 20 July 2018 at eerrg@newcastle.ac.uk.
The conference will be opened in the evening of 13 September with a keynote address by Dr Elaine Kelly (University of Edinburgh), followed by a conference dinner. The title of the keynote is “Musical Selves and Others: East German Imaginaries of the Post-Colonial World.”
The event is being organised in conjunction with the ‘GDR Today IV’ postgraduate symposium on 13 September and attendees are welcome to attend both events. The keynote and the conference dinner are common to both events. Participants in the EERRG conference on 14 September are strongly encouraged to arrive the previous day.
Accommodation will be available at a discounted rate (£55) in Newcastle University’s nearby hall of residence. The fee for delegates is £40.
