The Immediacy of Performance Drawing

Isabella Tessier - The Immediacy of Performance Drawing

As part of a British Council Venice Biennale fellowship undertaken in the summer of 2022, Isabella Tessier discussed her research into drawing movment in response to dance performances watched during the Venice Biennale. The talk explored the experiences of creating drawn artefacts of performance, while as a steward in the British Pavilion, as Tessier reflected upon the immediacy of drawing and the world building potential of printing.

Art Works were exhibted in the space and the talk was accompanyed by a workshop called ‘2 large collaborative drawings + 1 sneaky print’ that ran on Thursday 9th of February at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m with the contribution of artist, Eliza Brown. The workshop was free to come along to on the day, no resevration required.

Isabella Tessier is a Final year Fine Art student at Newcastle University and Venice Biennale Fellow who works between drawing, print and projection. Tessier’s practice engages with the transmission between drawing and performative movement and explores the capabilities of transferring marks through printing techniques to create ‘re-performances’. Tessier has collaborated with local theatres companies in Newcastle such as Alphabetti Theatre and Theatre Space to produce drawn impression used for installations and is currently collaborating with FLOW, an initiative teaching primary school children to dance inspired by the Tyne River.
