Art and Mental Health

Using art to promote positive mental health

Sometimes, projects are developed through chance encounters with an external partner who has skills and experience in a particular area, which they can bring to the classrooom, providing students with a unique learning experience.  Projects can be built around authentic tasks, outputs or audiences, and this art project utilises all three.

Many KS3 and KS4 students suffer from mental health issues at some point, and often their developing sense of self-identity needs to be supported by their teachers and those at home.  Lauren Curry, artist and mental health advisor for young people, is passionate about using art and particularly comic book art to help those who feel marginalised or discriminated against, and by producing artwork, they can express their feelings and their identity to a wider audience.  The project "Art and Positive Mental Health" could be used with a range of young people either in the classroom or in an extra-curricular sense.

Lauren Curry, the artist involved in this project, developed a project brief which could be used either in KS3 or KS4 art, integrated into PSCHE programmes, or made into an extra-curricular project for students in need of support with mental health or self-identity issues.  The project plan can be downloaded above.
