Environmental Oral History

Following the successful completion of the research phase of the international Living Deltas Hub, we are now using the findings and methods from the Voices of the Deltas oral history project, that was part of the Hub. We are extending engagement and impact in Africa and South Asia.

Graham Smith continues to collaborate with colleagues in Vietnam and India, cooperating with international non -governmental organisations (NGOs), including Restless Development and Help Age International (HAI). The work will continue to be collaborative as it was in the first phase that was led by Siobhan Warrington.

By taking an intergenerational approach, we have been able to better understand the value of solidarity between generations, the experiences of older people in living through climate change, and the responses across ageing at individual and community levels to rapid historical changes in environment and environmental policies.

In this phase our original research has contributed to national and regional policy briefings on ageing and environmental changes, with HAI producing draft reports and learning sessions this month based on workshops held in late 2024.

Interconnected projects in environmental oral history, with international partners, including Help Age International, in Vietnam and Bangladesh and, the Archives at the National Centre for Biological Science in India. These projects are built on research by Siobhan Warrington with Graham Smith for the Living Deltas Hub. The work promotes intergenerational approaches that identify the significance of subjective memories of environmental change to activists, scientists and policy makers.
