Byker Community Archive: Funding Boost

With this funding, Karbon Homes, who manage the estate, and Northern Cultural Projects CIC will be able to transform one of the Estate’s original Hobby Rooms. The Byker Community Archive will be a modular, accessible space where residents, students, and anyone interested in the history of the Estate will be able to explore its material and cultural heritage. The archive will be community-led, providing people who live on the estate with volunteering and employment opportunities.   

In spring 2026, the Archive welcomed Collective members Dr Sally Watson and Dr Hannah James Louwerse, who will be sharing the Archivist role. The Archive has partnered with Newcastle-based Gardiner Richardson to produce its own line of merchandise, sales of which will support the project. 

Consultation on the physical development of the soon-to-be Archive space is ongoing.
