AHRC-Funded PhD: Hospital Volunteering in the ‘far North’ of England, 1979-1997
Lily Tidman is interviewing people who volunteered in various healthcare organisations 1979-1997, combining life history and thematic methods. Her project explores the motivations for volunteering in healthcare, policing and performance of care and altruism among volunteer groups, and understandings of local and rural health challenges in this peripheral area of England. The project explores popular understandings of the North-south health divide, deindustrialisation, and rural health challenges in the North of England during this period. Volunteers’ experiences are sited within broader processes within late 20th century Britain, including marketisation of public services, deregulation, and diversification of the third sector.
Lily's PhD project is funded through the Northern Bridge Consortium DTP.
