On-Site/Off-Site: digital commissions announced

‌We are delighted to announce that we have appointed artists Hanna Tuulikki and Ruth Ewan to develop digital commissions with our project partners.

Hanna Tuulikki will work closely with The Bewick Society to develop her work 'Avi Alarm' which will draw on Bewick’s 'History of British Birds' (1797) to create augmented reality filters for Instagram relating to birds which are now on the endangered species red list’ This is the first contemporary commission to be undertaken by The Bewick Society, and they will be supported by both the National Trust and Newcastle University. Tuulikki is a British-Finnish artist, composer and performer based in Scotland. Her multi-disciplinary projects investigate the ways in which the body communicates beyond and before words, to tell stories through imitation, vocalisation and gesture. With a largely place-responsive process, Tuulikki considers how bodily relationships and folk histories are encoded within specific environments, ecologies and places. You can find out more about Tuulikki and her work here.

Working with the National Trust team at Cherryburn and The Bewick Society, we were delighted to be able to award a second commission, supported by Newcastle University, to the Glasgow-based artist Ruth Ewan. Ewan will be exploring lesser known aspects of Thomas Bewick, including his activism and links with radical socialism. Ewan’s work addresses ideas of power and questions representations of time, rebellion and repression. Her work grows from context-specific research resulting in a wide variety of forms including events, public works, performance, writing, large-scale installations and print. For Cherryburn, Ewan will be creating an audio-performance piece and accompanying sleeve notes. For more information on Ewan’s work see here.

Keep an eye on this website for more details of when the two new artworks will launch.
