My lab is interested in understanding stress responses in the emerging human fungal pathogen Candida auris. In contrast to the most common human fungal pathogen Candida albicans, C. auris is able to survive on dry surfaces such as bed linen, is able to colonise human skin and is transmissible from person to person. Therefore, the environmental stresses faced by C. auris are different from those encountered by C. albicans and consequently the response to stress between these two species must be distinct. Interestingly, five clades of C. auris showing high inter-clade genetic diversity have emerged simultaneously on three different continents and my lab is interested in how stress responses differ between isolates belonging to these different clades.
