Pint of Science Festival
- Venue: The Lonsdale Hotel, Lonsdale Terrace, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 3HQ
- Start: Mon, 14 May 2018 18:30:00 BST
- End: Mon, 14 May 2018 22:00:00 BST
As part of the Pint of Science Festival, Dr Tom Penfold, in tandem with Dr Nick Walker, will be giving a talk entitled "From Atoms to the Cosmos" at The Lonsdale Hotel. The theme of the talk is about how lasers and telescopes can be used to understand the universe, and how a better understanding of the way molecules move on Earth can further improve our knowledge of space. Dr Penfold's portion of the talk is called "Watching Chemistry Happen" and it focuses on ultrashort laser pulse experiments; how they are performed and what they can tell us about how atoms move. Dr Walker's portion is entitled "Starlight and the Chemical Cosmos" and it concentrates on how modern experiments reveal a universe of increasing chemical complexity throughout the hostile environment of space, and how these experiments could ultimately reveal the existence of extra-terrestrial life.
