Iwinosa Aghedo recently presented some novel results from her PhD project at the 43rd International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering (OMAE) in Singapore. Her paper investigates the effect of episodic storm events on the performance of monopile foundations for offshore wind turbines.
The study uses 3D finite element analysis with a critical state-based kinematic hardening constitutive model, calibrated against cyclic triaxial experiments. The FE model was successfully validated against centrifuge test results on a 6m diameter monopile in soft clay subjected to multiple episodes of cyclic loading and reconsolidation. Then, the performance of a reference 15MW OWT supported on a 10m diameter monopile was investigated. The reference turbine was subjected to three ten-minute storms of combined wind and wave loading representative of a 10-year return period, with reconsolidation periods between each storm.
