NetZero GeoRDIE
NetZero GeoRDIE brings together world leading researchers from Newcastle University, University of Glasgow and Durham University, in close association with the EPSRC National Centre for Energy Systems Integration (CESI), to research single well geothermal systems as part of a whole energy system. CESI is based in the Urban Science Building (£58m; opened in 2018, next to the EPSRC-funded National Innovation Centre for Data) at Newcastle Helix, a 10 ha site that Newcastle University is developing in partnership with Newcastle City Council and Legal & General. The Urban Science Building has >4000 sensors to monitor a range of functions and is located adjacent to a 1.6 km deep geothermal well. It hosts and contributes to the Urban Observatory, which displays through an open website the largest set of publicly available real time urban data in the UK. Glasgow University is redeveloping the 6 ha Western Infirmary site, in a £1 billion investment. Through major investment and partnerships, both universities are pioneering innovative urban developments that reduce CO2 emissions.
