Fragility analysis of offshore wind turbines
Dr Tom Charlton and Dr Mohamed Rouainia have just published a new open access article on geotechnical fragility analysis of monopile foundations for offshore wind turbines in extreme storms in Renewable Energy. The paper develops an efficient methodology for assessing the geotechnical performance of monopiles under extreme wind and wave loading. Fragility describes the probability of failure over a range of hazard intensities and the paper generates fragility curves for an example monopile-supported OWT in the North Sea in terms of permanent rotation at the mudline and uses storm return period as an intensity measure.
