PhD student Sam Graham has recently presented a new short paper titled “Stiffening of shales up to 200C: Insights from high-load nanoindentation tests” at the 2021 American Rock Mechanics Association annual symposium (18-25 June).

The paper uses state-of-the-art high-temperature capable nanoindentation equipment with our partners at MicroMaterials to investigate the evolution of bulk elastic, yield and creep behaviour of shale. The paper combines micromechanics with detailed microstructural observations to explore the interplay between diagenetic factors and in-situ temperature in the evolution of shale mechanical response.
