SMM2021-success

This week NAIL's Cameron Trotter, Georgia Atkinson and Kirsten Richardson had their abstract submissions to SMM2021 accepted. SMM2021 will be the 24th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals and will be the Society of Marine Mammology's first fully hybrid event, with people attending both in person (at the Palm Beach County Convention Centre in West Palm Beach, Florida) and virtually, and with the largest number of attendees since the first conference in Santa Cruz in 1975.

Cameron, Georgia and Kirsten are all doing doctorate projects in conservation tech, looking at how deep learning can contribute to marine mammal research both in terms of data collection and data analysis.

Cameron's poster is titled 'Automatic Photo-Identification of Cetaceans via Deep Learning'

Georgia's poster is titled 'Acoustic Identification of Dolphin Whistles using Deep Learning Techniques'

Kirsten's poster is titled 'Using Autonomous Underwater Vehicles to collect data on free-swimming cetaceans in the wild'

Presenting at SMM2021 will provide a fantastic opportunity to showcase their work and engage in conversation with the end-user of the systems they are developing i.e. marine mammal researchers.
