Poster Prize at BioExcel Summer School

The BioExcel Centre of Excellence for Computational Biomolecular Research aims to drive the use of powerful computational methods in life science (with a focus on drug design, biotechnology, food and chemical industries). The group provides access to tools, support and training in their use and networking opportunities, as well as helping users to access the computing infrastructure needed to use these.

The summer school, which ran 12-17 June, was an excellent opportunity to gain some hands-on experience as well as meet with peers at a similar stage in their research. Highly recommend to anyone considering the use of computational methods in their own research!

Rachael Pirie (Cohort 1) attended the summer school and said:

“This month I was lucky enough to be chosen to attend the BioExcel Summer School on Biomolecular Simulations. The week provided hands on experience using computational methods such as docking, free energy perturbation calculations and molecular dynamics at the Science and Technology Park of Sardinia. It was lovely to discuss research in person again (especially in such a fantastic place!) and I was delighted to be awarded a poster prize by my peers for our work on molecular shape similarity comparison methods.”

Her supervisor Dr Daniel Cole added:

“BioExcel is the leading European Centre of Excellence for Computational Biomolecular Research, and their summer training activities are very highly regarded. Attending this event has given Rachael a fantastic opportunity to broaden her skills in structure-based drug design and meet some of her peers in person, which is especially important following two years of pandemic restrictions. To win a poster prize is a nice added bonus, and testament to both Rachael and the training she's received as an affiliated MoSMed CDT member.”
