Awards for Research into Neglected Tropical Diseases
Global SDG Award - Durham's Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases Team
Prof Paul Denny and his team won the Global Challenge Research Fund Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases. Paul Denny and his team brought together over 500 researchers from 13 global institutes to focus on leishmaniasis and Chagas disease. Led by the Durham Team, this Network has developed equitable research collaborations and increased research capacity in endemic countries across Asia and South America through capacity-building workshops, leading to important drug discovery advances. Since Spring 2023, the project has received funding from UK Research and Innovation, GSK and overseas agencies, placing the Durham Team at the heart of a package of work, which will ultimately change the lives of millions.
Medical Research Council - Outstanding Team Impact Award
Another success for Prof Paul Denny and the wider team at Durham for making the final three for Outstanding Team Impact Award from the Medical Research Council for his work on Equitable global cooperation to support the fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). This was very much a team effort, so a big thank you to all our researchers who made this happen - your efforts are enormously appreciated!
NTDs affect around one in six people worldwide, mostly from the poorest communities of the ‘global south.’ The MRC Global Challenges Research Fund-funded Global Network for NTDs brought together over 500 researchers from 13 institutes around the world, via new collaborative research teams focused on leishmaniasis and Chagas disease. The network sought to democratise and decolonise the field, through growing laboratory research capacity and expertise in endemic countries across Asia and South America, making significant scientific advances in the process, and demonstrating globally equitable working practices.
