Based on recent clinical and registry data, Smith & Nephew have issued a new urgent field safety notice related to the Birmingham Hip Modular Head. Results from a prospective clinical study (N = 158) indicate that those who have had the product implanted are at increased risk of revision surgery. There are also concerns that there may be an increased risk of fretting corrosion and accelerated release of metal debris as results show that 43.7% of the patients were found to have levels of Cobalt and Chromium above 7 parts per billion.
