MEPs back stronger controls on medical devices

The European parliament has overwhelmingly approved stricter monitoring and certification procedures for medical devices such as breast or hip implants. The measures, which are designed to increase patient safety and to strengthen the traceability of medical products, were approved in Brussels on 2 April by 541 votes to 19, with 63 abstentions.

However, the draft legislation has a long way to travel before it reaches the statute book. European Union governments, whose approval is also required, are still examining the proposal that the European Commission tabled in September 2012 and are far from agreeing on the new requirements.

The parliament has called on the European Commission to establish a multidisciplinary medical device advisory committee to provide guidance on controversial products.  Read more here.
