Dr Tom Joyce’s work investigating the reasons for failed hip joint replacements featured on the Irish national news documentary “Prime Time” this week. Tom discusses the importance of measuring how much metal has worn from the failed hip joints, by testing joints which have been removed from patients. Tom and his team at Newcastle University among only a handful of experts in the world independently analysing the failed hip joints with a view to examining and reporting on design faults. In the film, Tom and researcher Martin Bone are shown examining failed hips using a state-of-the-art Co-ordinate Measuring Machine which gives an intricate picture of how the joints have worn.
