Metal-on-metal hips: a failure of engineering?

In 2007 total hip replacement was termed the "operation of the century" and many patients have benefited greatly from it. However metal-on-metal hips, which promised superior results, have not delivered. Prof Joyce, a keynote speaker for the IMechE's ground-breaking event "Lessons learnt: preventing future articifical joint failures", presents the work undertaken with surgeons from the north east, which has helped to explain the world-wide failures of several designs of metal-on-metal hips.
