Gogmagog 'Soup Supper'
Since January, project artist Matt Stokes has been working alongside community groups, local musicians and artists in the East End of Sunderland to develop his commission for Holy Trinity Church. A key stage of this process is to hold a series of 'Soup Suppers' with members of these groups, to bring individuals together, share progress on the project and spark ideas and further inspiration for the artwork. Last Wednesday (7 March) was the first of these suppers, bringing together musicians and clergy, singers and researchers, joined by the CCT, in the wonderfully atmospheric vestry room of the Georgian church. The chill March night was driven out by the sounds of live music, samples of the sound pieces created within the local music community and the smells and tastes of Matt’s delicious soup and bread. Matt presented some of the research he’s been doing into the background to the artwork, illustrating the rich heritage of the church and Old Sunderland area and showing how these stories are threading into the final art work. It was a wonderful evening, and will be followed up with a second supper involving further community group participants later this month.
