Are you interested in how the food system works, and how the information we have about our food informs?
We are looking for 6 volunteers to become members of a Citizens Advisory Panel to contribute to our research project ‘Making Provisions: anticipating food emergencies and assembling the food system’. In this project we are exploring how those involved in production, processing, retail, management and governance of food anticipate future problems and develop plans to avoid them or deal with them, particularly how the use of information about the food, and the technologies for generating and managing that information, may help or hinder this. Over the past 18 months we have conducted interviews and observations about how we plan for various problems and possible emergencies within the food system – emergencies could include animal disease outbreaks, accidental contamination, food-borne illnesses, or concerns over the provenance or ingredients of foodstuffs. We now want to begin the next stage of our research and draw out realistic lessons and messages from our analysis, and that is where you can help.
Being a member of the Citizens Advisory Panel would offer you the opportunity to comment on our findings and help shape the messages we will be communicating with government, our funders and food industry actors about how we can build a more resilient food system.
What is involved: You must be able to meet on three evenings throughout this summer, these are: Wednesday 29 June, Wednesday 13 July, with a further meeting to be held in September. Panel meetings will be held in central Newcastle at the Newcastle University campus opposite Haymarket metro station, and planned to begin at 6pm and end by 8pm (light refreshments and a contribution of thanks for your time will be offered).
How to become a Panellist: Please email Dr Jane Midgley at jane.midgley@ncl.ac.uk by mid-day Friday 10 June with a brief explanation of your interest in the food system and confirmation of your availability for the first two meeting dates. The research team will then be in touch.
With thanks,
Andrew, Jane and Jeremy – the Making Provisions research team.
