 Summary, January 2000

In 1994, the Economic and Social Research Council set up a Research Programme into "The Learning Society: Knowledge and Skills for Employment". Fourteen projects were funded and, at the time the Findings summaries were written (June, 1999), twelve had completed and the other two were due to finish by December, 1999. This was therefore an appropriate moment to take stock of what had been achieved and to begin the dissemination of the findings of the Programme. Four conferences have now been held in Glasgow, London, Cardiff and Belfast.

The projects have produced for the general reader a brief, two-page summary of their aims, methods, main findings and policy implications. A list of key publications for each project has also been included for those who wish to know more about a particular topic. The two projects which had still to complete at the time of writing produced interim reports.

In addition to the publications produced by the individual projects, the Programme as a whole has signed a contract with the Policy Press at Bristol University to publish a series or reports on some of the main themes emanating from the research, all edited by Frank Coffield.

·        Learning at Work, published in October 1998

·        Why’s the Beer Always Stronger up North?  Studies of Lifelong Learning in Europe, published in January 1999

·        Speaking Truth to Power: Research and Policy on Lifelong Learning, published in July 1999

          ·        The Necessity of Informal Learning, published in January 2000

Two volumes are also to be published in the coming year by the Policy Press, each containing an extended overview article by seven projects.

The Programme also obtained funds from the ESRC to commission a Review of vocational education and training research in the UK by Dr Alan Brown and Dr Ewart Keep of Warwick University. Copies of this major and comprehensive review are currently being printed by the European Commission and will shortly be available from the ESRC SKOPE Research Centre at Warwick University, Coventry, CV4 7AL, or from Frank Coffield.

The Programme has published widely throughout its lifetime and some of the main items are listed here:

·        Journal of Education Policy, vol 12, no 6, November 1997.  A special edition of the Journal, edited by Frank Coffield on “The Concept of The Learning Society Explored”.  Nine articles in all.

·        COFFIELD, Frank (ed) (1997) A National Strategy for Lifelong Learning, Newcastle: Department of Education, University of Newcastle.  Eleven chapters.

·        COFFIELD, F (ed) (1999) Breaking the Consensus: Lifelong Learning as Social Control, Newcastle: Department of Education, University of Newcastle.

Copies of the last two publications and of this set of findings are available from Frank Coffield at the address below and he will be happy to answer any questions about the Programme.
