Dr Jo Lally

Role(s) within the UniversitySenior Research Associate, NIHR Research Design Service (RDS) Senior Research Methodologist; NIHR RDS Patient and Public Involvement Lead; Member of the Innovation, Methodology and Application Research Group and Population Health Sciences Institute (PHSI).  

Background 

Jo undertook both her MSc and PhD at Newcastle University, exploringhealth service quality indicators and shared decision making in childbirth. 

During and since her PhD she has worked on a variety of projects as qualitative researcher; on a large multi-centre trial looking at advances in lung transplantation; Acomparative case study on health inequalities which has involved significant PPI work; A study focussing on diabetes in pregnancy; Developing international comparative quality indicators as a way of assessing quality of inpatient care. Alongside this qualitative work Jo has also led several grants looking at ways of increasing the diversity and inclusion of those patients and public members that we include in research, developing innovative models of engagement including illustrations, creative writing, comic art and video. 

In her RDS role Jo delivers advice and support to researchers developing funding applications on both the qualitative methods, general grant writing skills, EDI and involving patients and public in their work.

Supervision and Teaching: 

Jo has led qualitative research methods sessions, sessions focussing on involving patients and public in research and has helped to develop the postgraduate course on NVivo.  

Jo currently has a several PhDstudents working on topics including physiotherapy, prescribing, shared decision making and quality of care. She is also an internal assessor for several PhD students – both students and those undergoing a PhD by staff regulations
