Background
Abisola has an undergraduate degree in Biology, an MPH with a focus on health promotion and disease prevention and a PhD in Public Health which she obtained from the University of Sheffield in 2017. She is experienced in conducting high quality applied health research using a range of qualitative research methods. During her PhD, she used qualitative research methods to explore the lived experiences of HIV positive men who have sex with men (MSM) living in Nigeria particularly in relation to how they navigate and negotiate access into the healthcare system in Nigeria. She has since continued to build a research portfolio in applied health research with marginalised, vulnerable, and hard-to-reach populations using qualitative research methods.
In previous roles, she has worked on a range of NIHR-funded applied health research projects including projects exploring experiences of memory and place in a medium secure unit, experiences of self-management of long-term physical health conditions in people with severe mental illness, enablers and barriers to clinical academic careers in the UK, and General Dental Council Fitness to Practice experiences of dentists. She currently works as a Research Associate within the Population Health Sciences Institute at Newcastle University. Her current role involves working in partnership with children and young people in contact with children’s social care, parents/caregivers and local authority practitioners from social care and mental health care to co-produce interventions to promote mental health and emotional wellbeing.
