Carrickabraghy

Carrickabraghy

A mass stone at Carrickabraghy on Doagh Island, Donegol. This would have been used as an altar during the mid-17th century as a location for Roman Catholic Mass. Isolated locations were chosen for mass at this point due to difficulty and dangers at a time of Cromwell's campaign against the Irish and the Penal law of 1695.

This stone several cup and ring marks on it but it is difficult to tell if they were added when the stone was erected for mass, or are prehistoric.
