Nodal seismic survey completed at RAF Leeming

Newcastle University is partnering with STRYDE to explore novel approaches to characterising the potential to harness geothermal energy for heating.

As part of the ViTAL Living Lab project, approximately 3,500 STRYDE Nodes™ have been deployed across more than 5km2 to image and better understand the subsurface geology. Taking place from June – August 2022, miniature seismic recording devices (nodes) were deployed on the surface of RAF Leeming, with subsequently a low-impact seismic source (seismic weight drop) used to generate a geological image of the subsurface.

The high-density deployment is allowing us to investigate the optimum processing flows for passive seismic in geothermal resource characterisation. Individual cross-correlation pairs can be effectively used to identify body- and surface-wave arrivals. The goal is to produce a 3D velocity structure, using body waves to invert for P-velocity and surface waves to invert for S-velocity
