Dr Robert Westaway
It is with sadness that we record the untimely death in August 2021 of Dr Robert Westaway, Senior Research Fellow at University of Glasgow. During his career in geoscience, he undertook prominent research on the extraction of heat from underground, ranging from shallow mine workings to deep sedimentary aquifers. Beyond geothermal research, he had research interests in earthquake seismology, geophysical prospecting, mathematical geophysics, Earth deformation and geomechanics.
Rob was instrumental in assessing the geothermal potential at the Helix site and went on to investigate the geometry of the Butterknowle Fault, which inspired the Science Central geothermal project.
In 2006, Rob received the Wiley Award for best ESPL paper for Investigation of coupling between surface processes and induced flow in the lower continental crust as a cause of intraplate seismicity.
