Home and transport

Dan

danFor my challenge I decided to try to reduce the amount of energy used in my flat. After a little research I discovered that there are hundreds of ways to do just that. Most of the tips I tried were rather passive (such as replacing all my light bulbs with modern energy-efficient ones), but those types of changes were great because they took less than five minutes to accomplish, but they reap benefits for months and years to come. All in all it was simpler than I’d expected, and all of my little efforts should make a sizeable reduction in my energy use.

Adrian

ajMy eco-challenge was turning off all the heating in my room for two weeks. By lowering heating settings, people can save money and energy. Although it was somewhat cold at times, as long as I wore a jacket and kept my socks on I was always warm enough. It wasn’t very difficult, and I’ll probably continue to keep my heating off (or at least at one one of the lowest settings), and I recommend that others consider doing the same.

Rebecca

rebeccaFor my challenge I chose to use home-made cleaning products that contained no harmful chemicals. I used bicarbonate of soda mixed with a little water to make a paste for cleaning surfaces, the cooker and most of the bathroom. Lemon was good to add when cleaning the kitchen, as it cleans greasy surfaces very well. I used olive oil as polish, and vinegar became a good fabric softener! My experience made me think about how many chemicals I would normally use.

Fiona

fionaI decided to stop using public (and private) transport for my challenge. This meant walking everywhere, which seemed relatively straightforward until the freezing weather conditions set in! Weather aside, I did enjoy walking, especially first thing in the morning. Using a pedometer I could monitor how far I was walking every day, and many of the journeys I might have used public transport for were actually a lot closer than I had realised.
