Stephen Hurrel’s practice is mainly context-based. He works with video, sound, sculpture and text to explore relationships between people and place. His work often connects with science and technology to explore interactions and tensions between nature and contemporary society. In recent years he has focused on marine-based projects and associated socio-ecological issues. This includes expeditions with art-science organisations Cape Farewell and The Clipperton Project within the Azores, the Outer Hebrides and Mexico.

Over the past three years he has collaborated with a social-ecologist to produce several works including a publication, an online cultural map of the sea and an ambient film. His work has been shown in galleries, contemporary art festivals and public spaces in Europe, America, Australia and New Zealand. He has also produced several permanent public artworks in the UK and in Australia. This year his work featured as part of Generation - 25 years of Contemporary Art in Scotland.
