We are pleased to welcome influential artist, film-maker and gardener Karen Guthrie.

Currently Guthrie is artist in residence at Hauser & Wirth Somerset her work is deeply rooted in history – official and unofficial, subjective and objective. From encounters with the life-experiences of communities and people, her films originate from her interest in a community’s specific sense of pride and achievement.

She has been working collaboratively with Nina Pope under the name Somewhere since the mid 90s. Winners of the Northern Art Prize in 2008, their solo exhibition ‘Past, Present, Somewhere’ is currently on show at Kettle Yard in Cambridge. Their participatory projects range from interactive online worlds to,community gardens. Their acclaimed documentary films shine a light on often marginalised or unknown communities ranging from historical re-enactors (Living with the Tudors, 2007) to seaside fugitives (Jaywick Escapes, 2012). Of their first film Bata-ville: We Are Not Afraid of the Future (2005) critic Andrew O’Hehir said “It’s drily funny, sad, deeply weird and British to the very core of its being.”

Guthrie is also currently Head Gardener for Grizedale Arts in The Lake District.
