Toby Christian’s multifaceted practice uses writing through an expanded sculptural field, which also incorporates installation, animation and wall-based work. The texts Christian presents in an exhibition context are available to be removed by the public. They explore the sculptural possibilities of writing, describing the minutiae of objects, co-opting specialist terminologies to sketch out provenance. Fictional materials are assimilated with factual matter, as written compositions use varying degrees of analysis, from conjecture to fastidiousness. Although concerned with the physical makeup of the world, Christian’s writings “flirt with the hermetic, often obscuring the objects they supposedly describe”. Toby Christian lives and works in Glasgow.
